Delivery, disinfection, and the limits of mobile automation on a busy unit.

Delivery robots

Autonomous mobile robots move linens, meals, medications, and specimens along fixed routes at low speed. Their success depends less on autonomy than on:

  • Elevator integration (usually via a fire-rated bridge to the elevator controller).
  • Badge / door integration for controlled spaces.
  • Loading and unloading workflow at each end, with a defined handoff to staff.
  • Route protection for narrow corridors and blind corners.

UV-C disinfection

UV-C (~254 nm) robots deliver germicidal dose to exposed surfaces during room turnovers. Effective on hardy pathogens (C. difficile spores, MRSA, MDR-Acinetobacter) when line-of-sight is unobstructed, but ineffective in shadow zones. Programs that report strong results tie the robot's cycle to a documented manual cleaning first, robot second protocol, not the reverse.

  • ANSI/AAMI ST58 — chemical sterilization and high-level disinfection.
  • IEC 60335-2-65 and IEC 61010 — safety for UV-emitting equipment.
  • CDC Guideline for Disinfection and Sterilization in Healthcare Facilities.
  • ISO 10218 / ISO/TS 15066 — safety for industrial and collaborative robots (informative for AMRs).
