Circadian design, examination light, and the difference between them.

The four scenes

Well-designed patient rooms support at least four scenes:

  1. Ambient day — general illumination for family and quiet activity.
  2. Examination — high-CRI directional light at the bed.
  3. Patient-controlled reading — a warm, glare-free source at the head of bed.
  4. Nighttime pathway — low-level, low-CCT light to the bathroom.

IES targets

The Illuminating Engineering Society RP-29 Lighting for Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities gives task-based recommendations:

Circadian tuning

Tunable-white fixtures shift CCT and intensity through the day (e.g. 3500–5000 K morning, 2700 K evening). WELL Building Standard and IES TM-30/TM-33 provide practical guidance. Clinical outcome evidence is still developing; the strongest signals appear in delirium prevention among ICU patients.
