Medical Gases at the Bedside

Oxygen, air, vacuum, and how NFPA 99 shapes what comes out of the wall.

The four bedside services

A typical inpatient headwall exposes four piped services: oxygen, medical air, vacuum (suction), and — in higher-acuity rooms — nitrous oxide or WAGD (waste anesthetic gas disposal). Oxygen is generated on-site by a bulk cryogenic tank or by pressure-swing adsorption; medical air is compressed and dried locally.

Outlet indexing is designed so that no regulator can be misconnected to the wrong gas. A misconnection event triggers a root-cause analysis under Joint Commission Sentinel Event policy.

Zone valves and alarms

Every patient-care area has a zone valve box in the corridor that isolates that zone's supply. Behind that valve, a master and area alarm panel monitors line pressure and triggers audible alerts when pressure deviates outside the ±20% window. Clinical staff should be trained to locate — but not routinely operate — zone valves; closure is a fire-response or leak-response action.
