Who Builds the Hospital Room
The main categories of company involved in an inpatient room — from bed manufacturers to interoperability platforms — and what each actually does.

Beds and furnishings
Hospital-bed makers combine mechanical, electrical, and software engineering. Modern beds are load-cell instrumented (weight, bed-exit, angle of head-of-bed), integrate with nurse call, and stream data to the EHR. The mattress is a separate, high-margin category dominated by pressure-injury prevention.
Monitoring and devices
The device layer is where most vendor consolidation is happening. Companies that started in ECG or SpO2 now sell end-to-end monitoring stacks including central stations and ML deterioration scores. This blurs the line with EHR vendors, who ship their own flowsheet-integrated early-warning models.
Middleware and platforms
The most consequential and least visible segment. Middleware companies do the mundane work of translating device outputs into standards-compliant messages the EHR can accept, and routing alarms to the right handset in the right sequence. How hospitals actually buy
Purchasing is fragmented by category but coordinated by group purchasing organizations (GPOs) — Vizient, Premier, HealthTrust — which negotiate national contracts. Individual health systems layer local decisions on top, especially for capital equipment and IT. Any single "smart room" project therefore involves at least three procurement tracks (capital, IT, supply chain) and often more.
