The three precaution types
The CDC's 2007 Guideline for Isolation Precautions defines standard precautions plus three transmission-based categories:

How the room adapts
Contact and droplet precautions rarely require special construction — they require PPE staged at the door, clear signage, and dedicated equipment. Airborne precautions require an AIIR (see negative-pressure rooms) and documented daily verification.
Design details that matter more than they look:
- A PPE alcove or dedicated caddy right outside the door.
- A waste stream planned for high-volume gown/glove disposal.
- Dedicated equipment kept in the room (stethoscope, thermometer, BP cuff).
- Signage that names the precaution type and the PPE needed.
